Evening Post
While at the
Evening Post, I shadowed professional photojournalists and observed the way in
which they worked and managed their workload in the limited time frames that
they were given. I accompanied
professional photojournalists across South West Wales on varied assignments including promotional
photography at events, news stories and teacher retirements.
Towards the end of my placement, Steve Phillips (Picture Editor) told me to go and find a story in Swansea City Centre which I managed to do successfully. As a result, my image was printed in the paper the following Monday (pictured below).
This
work experience helped me develop press photography skills that I knew
little about before this placement. I learnt the importance of
photographing your subject closely so that it fills and dominates the
frame. It is important to fill the space provided so that the viewers
eye is drawn only to what it is suppose to be looking at and does not
wander off on to irrelevant elements of the image. This was one aspect of my image that was weak as I did not fill the frame with the main subject and there is a lot of distraction in the background.
I also learnt the importance of punctuality at a press publishing industry as if your images are not on time, they will not be used and effectively could ruin a good story. This would be unacceptable in a professional working environment.
Exist Skatepark
I also managed to gain some valuable work experience at Exist Skatepark in Swansea during the summer of 2011.
During
my time working at the skatepark, there were two key aspects that I helped me gain further media experience.
One of the jobs I had was to photograph skateboarders around the skatepark, show off the parks facilities but also successfully capture the skateboarder in the park. Examples of this work can be seen at the bottom of the 'Sports Photography' page.
Another one of the jobs, which I was assigned with was filming
skateboarders around the park. I
had to apply skills I already had in filming skateboarders (as I have been
filming skateboarding since I was around thirteen) as well as getting useful
tips from Richard Cartwright on how to film with the professional equipment
that he has got. I learnt a lot
about filming on top of
the skills I had already acquired after skateboarding and filming for ten
years. It was a very enjoyable
aspect of the work experience that I got as I was able to film skateboarders on
a high standard.
